Hello! I must confess I didn't watch the latest 'Battlestar Galactica' series. I did watch the old one a lot, so I know something about the original plot and cast of characters. Please, I don't want to burden you too much, but if you can, give me a quick (feel free to write a longer one if you want) synopsis on what the new series was like?
You see, next week the local Podcast "League of Extraordinary Geeks" is going to review the board game by Fantasy Flight Games. I went to FFG's website, and the game looks very interesting! (Though if I buy an FFG game, it's definitely going to be Arkham Horror and it's expansions first). What would I need to know to understand the review best? Are the characters pretty much the same? I know Starbuck is a girl and Baltar is a mad scientist instead of dear old John Colicos (the original Cobra Commander role model if there ever was one), and I know Cylons evolve and can look like humans and often infiltrate human society. But it's basically a giant space carrier looking for earth with those awesome Viper fighters and Cylon Pinwheel attacks, yes? Thanks for your help! Gerry P.S. Wow there's even a Pegasus expansion. That doesn't look like Lloyd Bridges on the box cover though. |

Really good space opera, very realistic down to the "no sound in space' and the constant use of hand-held steady cam perspective so you feel like you're there watching. Some of the Cylon CG is a little weak at points, but the rest is awesome. They revised the plot to make all the characters more interwoven and very deep/complex. Baltar is a pimp! The surprise ending is very golgafrincham (don't ask or goolge it...or try to remember where you remember the name from if you don't want it spoiled).

Here's a link to a pretty inclusive synopsis of the series from the initial mini-series pilot and all up to the first half of Season 4. It includes characters and key story arcs.
Everything you were afraid to ask about "Battlestar Galactica" More on Season 4 and the Season 4 Finale are also covered in separate articles. I watched the series from beginning to end and it had it's highlights and low points. This series has a more serious tone that the original and the characters share only the names of the originals, not their personalities (or even genders in many cases) or back stories. Once you adjust to that, it becomes a quite engrossing series and one of the smarter SciFi channel offerings at the time (or even since). There were even some nods to the original series as the original Cylon Centurions were actually the models that fought in the first Cylon Wars that was fought 40 years earlier. The original Vipers were shown onboard Galactica to be used as museum displays (she was in the process of being decommissioned when the new series picks up). The show reminds me how young I really am. I sometimes watch the new show and they say frak and stuff weird like that. I asked my mom why they didn't just drop the f bomb or say Frick. Apparently tv was stricter back then. I realize how epic the shows were before Hannah Montana and crap like that. Please bring back the golden era of sci fi with shows akin to Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek.
